What We Do

Music: Play for Life is Australia’s only national campaign that supports and inspires Australians everywhere, from all walks of life, to make music. It is an initiative of the Music Council of Australia, a registered charity and Australia’s peak music organisation. We build grassroots awareness of, and support for, the links between music and the benefits to individuals and society. Our programs include:

A national school music initiative which unites half a million school children across Australia in music, on the same day, at the same time, to highlight the importance of music education in the nation’s schools and which drives music education into the media.

national week-long series of music making events, organised by people in local communities at the grassroots to demonstrate the benefits of active music making in a range of settings, from nursing homes and hospitals, to shopping centres, workplaces and community halls.

National Award schemes for people and programs in schools and communities that start and sustain community music programs in metropolitan, rural and remote areas of Australia.

national training and networking scheme for music leaders and local government, to increase opportunities for musical participation across the Australian community and to help build social cohesion.

Online support services for parents, musicians and want-to-be musicians of all ages and abilities.
